The Canterbury House International

Tutoring Center

The Canterbury House International Tutoring Center is a non-profit student organization that is dedicated to working with international students and their spouses for the improvement of conversational English, cultural understanding, and reading and writing skills.

The Canterbury House is funded through an endowment* specified to benefit the students and spouses of Michigan Tech and Finlandia University, thus our services are offered free of charge to any who wish to improve their conversational English, cultural understanding, and reading and writing skills. Our tutors/conversation partners are native English speakers who are also interested in broadening their own cultural understanding. International students and their spouses can determine the purpose of their sessions, can meet with the same tutor/conversation partner on a weekly basis, and can also meet in groups or as a family if they so desire. We have both male and female conversation partners, and those who come to the House can choose the tutor/conversation partner that they would be most comfortable working with.

We also offer "Chat & Chow," a weekly home-cooked meal and a chance to practice your conversational English in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The Canterbury House offers fellowships to graduate and undergraduate students who are interested in broadening their own cultural understanding by working with international students and their spouses. We also welcome all community and university members who are interested in donating their time and expertise to The Canterbury House International Tutoring Center.

If you are interested in either tutoring or getting placed with a conversational partner to improve your conversational English, cultural understanding, or reading and writing skills, please contact Neely at kfarren@mtu.edu.

All are welcome at The Canterbury House!

*This endowment is in trust through the Episcopal Association of College Workers. Although this organization is affiliated with the Episcopal Church, the Canterbury House Tutoring Center is non-partisan, and our coaches and staff have affiliations with many different religions and cultures. There is no proselytizing at the Canterbury House.
