Neely Farren I am a graduate student in the Rhetoric and Technical
Communication program at MTU. I am in the process of completing my
dissertation on the topic of Narrative Identity, that is, the way our
identities are shaped through the stories we are born into, the stories
we tell about ourselves and the stories we tell about others.
When
we understand that we come to know ourselves through individual and
cultural narratives, it becomes
apparent that who we understand ourselves to be will affect the ways
that we relate to each other, especially when our narratives differ
from the narratives of others.This
work is especially relevant to the mission statement of the Canterbury
House International Tutoring Center, where we are dedicated to
working with international students and their spouses to help them
improve their conversational English, reading and writing skills, and
cultural understanding. Some of our international students are
returning the favor and teaching English speakers their language and
improving our understanding of their culture. In this way, the
Canterbury House is an example of how it is possible for people
from different cultures to share their narratives, thereby improving
the relationships we have with others.
Mariana (Mare) Mueller is a masters student in the rhetoric and technical communication program, in the humanities department.

Jessica Racine
I grew up in Ishpeming, MI and graduated from Westwood High School in
2008. I'm currently majoring in Exercise Science in hopes of going to
medical school after graduating from Michigan Tech. I'm on the varsity
women's basketball team at Michigan Tech. I started working at the
Canterbury House to meet a new diverse group of people. I've loved it
thus far! I'm traveling to Tanzania and Kenya this summer with Biology
Without Borders--University of Minnesota Chapter to work with a group
in diabetes testing and working in the hospitals there. In my spare
time, I enjoy reading, traveling, playing cards, and being outside.

Amber Bageris Although I am originally from the metro Detroit area, I consider home
to be Houghton, MI. I absolutely love the scenery that every season has
to offer. But I enjoy the people and the atmosphere much more. If given
the opportunity I would live here for the rest of my life. Other than traveling and learning about different cultures, I have two
passions. One is Dance, the other is solutions to environmental
problems. With dance, I pretty much love every form. I have aspirations
to make it to a competition with ballroom dance, as well as own my own
studio to teach any other forms of dance. While I am on campus I am pretty busy. I am in a sorority, Delta Phi
Epsilon, which is truly a home away from home. I am very fortunate to
have such great sisters. Another organization I am involved in is the
Michigan Tech Dance Team.

Some of my hobbies include reading, making music, gardening, and playing outdoors. Canterbury House has been a great place for me to meet interesting and diverse people in a very comfortable way, and if you are reading this, I hope you will stop by. Peace"
